A report from Reuters claims that Research In Motion is considering a possible BlackBerry-branded music service. According to “sources with knowledge” about the supposed plan, RIM is in negotiations with four largest record companies–namely Universal Music Group, Sony Music, Warner Music Group, and EMI Group–to create a music service that would “run on top of BlackBerry Messenger.”
How that would work is anyone’s guess right now, but it sounds like a move to compete with the mobile media platform of Apple and Android. A spokesperson for RIM declines to comment.
Analysts say that while a music service would unlikely attract new users to BlackBerry, but it might keep existing BB customers interested. Reuters claims the service is expected to be unveiled by September 5.
